Baccarat naturals: why a low opposing hand gets no third card

A Banker total of 5 does not always receive another card. In the baccarat rules described below, an initial two-card 8 or 9 on either side ends the drawing stage for both hands. Check for that natural before applying a rule about low totals.

The first question is whether either hand is already natural

The City of Dreams Manila baccarat guide describes a natural as an 8 or 9 from the opening two cards. It also explains that baccarat uses the final digit of the total: picture cards and tens contribute zero, while an ace contributes one. This is the rule set used for the examples here; a different named product needs its own rules.

That order of operations matters. A note that says only “Banker 5 draws” has removed the condition that comes before it. Drawing rules apply after the natural check has been passed.

Follow one hand without skipping a step

Imagine Player receives a 4 and a 5. Banker receives a 2 and a 3. These are invented hands used to explain the sequence, not a record of a game we played.

Check Result What follows
Player opening total 4 + 5 = 9 Natural found
Banker opening total 2 + 3 = 5 Lower total, but no draw
Drawing stage Stops for both hands Compare 9 with 5

Player finishes ahead, 9 to 5. There is no missing Banker card to reconstruct. Adding an imaginary third card because Banker has only 5 would create a different hand from the one the rules permit.

Example: Player 4 plus 5 makes a natural 9; Banker 2 plus 3 stays at 5 without a third card.

“Natural” describes when the total was reached

An 8 made with three cards is a final total of 8, but it is not an opening two-card natural. Conversely, a 9 and a 9 in the opening deal total 18, which is a baccarat total of 8 and therefore a natural. Count baccarat points, not the face-value sum.

A second example helps isolate the trigger. If Player starts with 6 and 2 while Banker starts with 4 and 4, both have a natural 8. Drawing still stops, and the main hand comparison is a tie. A natural does not automatically mean that one side must win.

Separate dealing from payment

First establish the cards that the rules allow, then compare the final totals, then apply the paytable to the specific wager. Those are three different checks. Commission, an alternative Banker payment, or a separate side bet cannot tell you whether a third card should have been dealt.

The baccarat settlement guide covers the payment side of that distinction. The live-table guide places baccarat alongside other table formats, while okbet provides the broader topic overview.
